Every year, United Way’s Day of Caring brings organizations together through volunteering and community service. This year, Vitra Health had the privilege of participating for the second year in a row through United Way of Greater Plymouth County’s Day of Caring.
On the 25th anniversary of September 11, our team traveled to Family and Community Resources (FCR) in Brockton for a day of service. Our project was simple: help refresh the exterior of FCR’s office through power washing and other beautification projects. The impact of the day, however, went far beyond cleaning a building.
When we arrived, we were welcomed by Patricia Parker, President and CEO of FCR. Before we got to work, she took the time to sit with our team and share more about FCR, the people they serve, and the important work they do throughout the community.
For more than 50 years, FCR has supported children, adolescents, and adults affected by trauma, including domestic and sexual violence and human trafficking. Their work focuses on helping people find safety, support, and a path forward.
Hearing about the people behind these programs gave our volunteer project a deeper meaning. Our team was eager to get to work.
A few Vitra volunteers headed inside to clean and polish the beautiful woodwork in the main room of the Victorian building that FCR calls home. The rest of the team went outside to power wash the foundation, exterior, and surrounding fences.
There was just one small challenge: none of us had used a power washer before.
After a little troubleshooting, the cleaning began. Years of dirt and grime started washing away from the building and fences. Team members took turns with the power washer, with more than one person noting that the cleaning was surprisingly therapeutic.
Thankfully, it was a beautiful, sunny day, so no one seemed to mind getting a little wet.
A few hours later, the difference was undeniable. The exterior looked brighter, cleaner, and more inviting. Inside, the woodwork shined and the room smelled of fresh pine.
Our team had helped refresh a space that serves people during some of the most difficult moments in their lives. It was a simple project, but one that helped create a welcoming environment that reflects the dignity and care FCR works to provide every day.
At Vitra Health, we believe small acts of kindness can have a lasting impact. We were honored to spend the day putting our commitment to caring for our community into action and supporting an organization making a difference for individuals and families throughout the region.
Family and Community Resources has served children, adults, and families for more than 50 years. The organization supports people impacted by trauma and violence through a range of programs and services.
Through these programs, FCR helps individuals and families work toward greater safety, stability, and well-being.
