Surrounded by loved ones, neighbors, and members of his community, José, the patriarch of his family, recently celebrated an extraordinary milestone, his 105th birthday.
Born in the 1920s, José has witnessed more than a century of history. He has lived through world-changing events, technological advances, and generations of change, all while leaving a lasting impact on the people around him.
The celebration brought together family members from across the country, with relatives traveling from as far as Texas to honor their father, uncle, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Each family member proudly wore a white T-shirt celebrating José’s 105 years of love, guidance, and example.

His story is one of resilience, but it is also a reminder of the enduring importance of family, community, and compassionate care.
José’s home was filled with laughter and conversation as family, friends, and neighbors gathered to celebrate. Decorations filled every room and delicious food was shared among guests throughout the day. His caregiver and daughter, Suyapa, stayed by his side as he welcomed visitors with gifts and birthday wishes. Even family members in Spain joined the celebration by Facetiming José directly on his cell phone.
The afternoon began with a heartfelt blessing from the priest of José’s church, followed by a traditional Honduran meal featuring tajadas con carne molida and chuleta. It was a joyful reunion that reflected the close-knit family, and community José has built.

After enjoying lunch and a glass of lemonade, José asked Suyapa to bring him his walker. It was time for his afternoon nap, a daily tradition that, according to Suyapa, has been part of his routine since she was a little girl. Perhaps that is one of the secrets to reaching 105.
But beyond healthy habits, José’s greatest source of strength has been the unwavering love and personalized care he receives from his family in the comfort of his own home.
Vitra Health is honored to support José and his family through the Adult Foster Care program, helping make it possible for family caregivers to continue providing compassionate care where it matters most. Every day, thousands of families across Massachusetts benefit from this model of care that keeps loved ones together at home.

It was a privilege for the Vitra Health team to celebrate such a meaningful occasion. José’s life is a testament to the power of love, family, and community, and his legacy will continue to inspire everyone who has had the honor of knowing him.
Happy 105th Birthday, José.
